There’s something quite magical about playing Pooh Sticks with a small child.

We have lovely friends who live close to The Pooh Bridge in the Ashdown Forest. We’ve talked about wanting to take Isla there for a long time, but we’ve never had the time. Or to be honest, Isla hasn’t been old enough.

Playing Pooh Sticks at Pooh Bridge – August 2007

I have wonderful memories of going there when I was younger. To be fair, I was probably in my late teens, but it was still fun! My favourite photo of it is all of us having just thrown our solitary sticks into the river and seeing who had won….and there’s my Mum with a fist full of sticks! Who’s the kid here!?

When we visited them at the beginning of December to take Isla to her first Panto (Aladdin at The Hawth in Crawley) we decided that was the time to go.

Of course, as soon as we got in the car it started raining, and we were all pretty soggy by the end of it, but what family walk is ever done in dry weather!?

So, we made the short 10 minute walk down to the bridge, and then collected some sticks to throw in. The path down to the bridge has changed since I was last there, and has moved slightly further over, but it does mean when it’s wet and muddy it is a lot easier to get down there.

We had several rounds of Pooh Sticks, and somehow Chris managed to win a lot of the time. I think it was where he was standing – he got a fast flowing bit of stream, and his sticks didn’t get stuck in the bridge/dam like bits in the stream.

We had to explain the concept of the game to Isla several times, and I don’t think she really got it. I think she thought we were completely mad. Which we are! And we had to carry her from one side of the bridge to the other so we wouldn’t miss as to who won. But it was all good fun.

I think Isla was probably still slightly too young to fully understand what was going on, but I think she enjoyed herself. We’ll definitely have to take her again sometime.
