Does the cabbage soup diet work?
While Chris was away this week I decided it was the best time for me to diet, and find out does the cabbage soup diet work? Chris always refuses to do any sort of diet so I didn’t want to do it while he was around otherwise I’d never succeed and give in. So Sunday night I spent chopping lots of veg and cooking the soup ready to start the cabbage soup diet on Monday morning.
Below you can find the recipe I used, and what other bits you can eat on each day. But first of all how did it taste? I thought it would taste like crap to be honest, and it didn’t look too great either, so I decided to blend it up which improved it’s appearance a whole lot! With the spices that I added I think that may have improved the flavour a lot, I don’t know, but I was pleasantly surprised with how nice it was! And how did I do on the diet? Well, I stuck to it strictly Monday – Thursday, even though it nearly killed me on Thursday (I decided not to have anything for dinner that night as I wanted a crème egg so bad, that I would be really pissed off if I put soup in my mouth rather than a crème egg, so just ate nothing! I know, how sad am I!?) Weigh day for Slim for Spain is a Friday for me, though I did weigh myself on Sunday night before I started the diet, and so this Friday morning I jumped on the scales and was amazed that I’d lost 9lbs!!! I was totally gob smacked! This was the lightest I’ve been in about 2.5 years! I’m definitely doing this again! I have to say though, I’ve eaten like I normally do on Friday and Saturday, so I won’t be surprised if I end up putting a few of those pounds back on, but I’m going to try and be good.
So the recipe – this generally follows the same one as for the proper cabbage soup diet, but I’ve adapted it a bit for my tastes:
2 large onions
2 cloves of garlic (I love garlic so I did 4!!)
1-2 cans of tomatoes
1 bunch of celery
1 cabbage (the proper recipe said to only use half a head of cabbage, but I knew the rest would go to waste otherwise, so I put the whole lot in!)
about 2-3 litres of water, with a couple of veg stock cubes in it
1/2 – 1 tsp chilli powder
and whatever herbs you like, I did a mix of dried oregano, thyme, basil, and marjoram, and lots of black pepper, and just a little bit of salt.
Chop it all up and put it in a B.I.G pan (I ended up putting it in 2 Le Creuset pots, and they were full to the brim….If you have a jamming pan – use it!! )Cook the soup on a low heat for 2 hours, stirring occasionally, and then blitz it (so it looks more appetising!!)
So you can eat as much cabbage soup as you like pretty much, and there are certain other things you can eat as well on certain days, most of which you can eat as much as you can, it tells you to ‘stuff, stuff, stuff’:
Day 1 – Fruit
Day 2 – Veg (and a baked potato for dinner!!)
Day 3 – Fruit and veg
Day 4 – Bananas (up to 8) and skimmed milk (I don’t like milk, so swapped it for fat free natural yoghurt)
Day 5 – Beef and tomatoes
Day 6 – Beef and veg
Day 7 – brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables
I only managed up to day 4, but was really happy with the results. Chris came back from Germany and was the heaviest he’d been, possibly ever, and was impressed with how well I’d done, so we’ve just made another batch, and we’ll try it again in another few weeks – they advise you don’t do it for more than 7 days, or repeat it for at least 2 weeks as it is such a low calorie and nutrients diet.
To see what substitutions you can make if you don’t like any of the things you’re meant to have, or are vegetarian, vegan, or have any other dietary requirements, have a look at the website and it’ll tell you what you can and can’t have (www.cabbage-soup-diet.com )
I’ve always been very sceptical about diets like this, but I think I’ve proved that this one definitely works. I have however proved once again that I cannot complete anything I start!! I’d definitely suggest doing this diet if you’re looking to lose weight quickly for a certain occasion, or just to kick start your weight loss. I’ll try this one again in a few weeks, just to keep Chris company of course – I might even manage more than 4 days of it!!
What diets have you tried? Any that have worked?
